An Antique Thingy And I Don’t Mean My Mum!

An Antique Thingy And I Don’t Mean My Mum!

I had a really enjoyable afternoon out with my mum yesterday.  She’s, let’s say…the latter side of an 80 something year young woman and we often enjoy afternoons out together.

I genuinely enjoy spending time with her, not just because she’s my mum and I love her to bits, but because she’s funny and a pleasure to be around.  She finds it hard to accept her age, because in her head she’s still in her 60’s, if not younger.  I’m the same, I can’t believe I’m 53, because in my head I’m in my 30’s.  Yes she’s got a few niggles with this and that health wise, well actually, a lot of niggles, in fact I’d be here all blooming day if I had to list them all, but you don’t get to mums ripe age without gathering a few ‘blooming nuisance‘ (as mum puts it), aches and pains, but let’s just say she can’t do any cartwheels the way she used to. A Slow Meander to York – Part 3 – Tackling Our Tidal Fear

A Slow Meander to York – Part 3 – Tackling Our Tidal Fear

Here’s Part 3 of our ‘Slow Meander to York’.

Selby Lock to Naburn Lock

If you’ve read parts 1 & 2 of our cruise to York, I would firstly like to thank you for persevering, reading my ramblings and secondly, you may have realised we were not looking forward to The River Ouse part, because we’re wimps?  Yes maybe, but also because we’d heard many boaters speak of their own experiences which ranged from being enjoyable to having to be rescued by the coastguard, (more of that story in a later post).  Other boats were doing this run everyday, (well probably not in extreme weather conditions unless they were totally nuts) so we kept saying, “If we want to take the boat to York, we have to cruise the Ouse – Let’s do this!” Continue reading “A Slow Meander to York – Part 3 – Tackling Our Tidal Fear”

#WordlessWednesday – Clocks

#WordlessWednesday – Clocks

I do love unusual clocks.

This unusual clock called The Hastings Clock stands proudly in Rotherham and was erected in 1912 to commemorate the Coronation of King George V & Queen Mary on 22 June 1911.

I did wonder what the relevance of the hooves were under the large planter.

After doing a little research I came across this blog called ‘Memorial Drinking Fountains’ which explained it wasn’t only a clock tower, but also a drinking fountain.

The large planter was a drinking receptacle for horses, (hence the hooves).  There are smaller planters around the other side which were water fountains for the people of Rotherham to enjoy a drink of water.

If you fancy popping over to the ‘Memorial Drinking Fountains blog, click Here

I think it’s a beautiful clock and drinking fountain, what do you think?

A Slow Meander to York – Part 2 – The Selby Canal & Our First Challenge

A Slow Meander to York – Part 2 – The Selby Canal & Our First Challenge

We bought ‘Head in the Clouds’, over sixteen years ago, she was an empty rusty shell and has been transformed into our home.  There are still many things needing to be done to her, but we were able to move aboard last October and so far, we love living the boat life.

You can read this post, ‘It’s time to sell up and live on a boat where I explain a little more about her and the transformation so far.  Although we’ve had her for so long, we have only, so far enjoyed short journeys, so we thought it was time to try a bigger trip and venture up to York, which was always one ‘cruising‘ journey we wanted to do.  We were quite excited about the trip, it was a big deal for us because:- Continue reading “A Slow Meander to York – Part 2 – The Selby Canal & Our First Challenge”
