A Book Review – Ravens Gathering by Graeme Cumming

I had the pleasure of meeting Graeme at the Bloggers Bash in London in May of this year.    As a new, fairly nervous attendee, I was delighted when many people came to introduce themselves and made me feel so very welcome and at ease.  Graeme was one of these people.

When I first saw the cover of Graeme’s book, Ravens Gathering.  I was immediately drawn in.  I love to read a good thriller and both the cover and synopsis told me that’s exactly what it would be…

As she let her gaze drift around her, she saw that there were more birds.  Perhaps a dozen or so, perched among the trees that stood on the edge of the clearing.  And yet more were arriving, swooping down through the gap overhead and landing on branches that overlooked them.  The birds weren’t threatening, yet the sight of them all coming together in this dark and isolated spot was unnerving.  Tanya reached a hand out towards Martin, and was relieved to feel him take it.  She felt him move in behind her.  After the uncertainty she’d experienced with him in a similar position only a few moments ago, she recognised the irony of her reaction.  His closeness offered security.

“You know what they are, don’t you?”

A stranger’s arrival in a small village coincides with a tragic accident.  For the Gates family in particular it’s more than a coincidence, but unease increases following a brutal attack.  As tensions rise, a dark past returns to haunt them and others, while newcomers to the village are drawn into a mystery with terrifying consequences.

And only a select few know why the ravens are gathering.

————————————————————————-

Ravens Gathering certainly is intriguing.  It’s opening prologue leads you into a mystery which keeps you guessing throughout the whole book.  As each character introduces themselves into the story, you never truly know who to trust or in fact what is exactly going on in this small village, until you’re nearing the latter stages of the book and reach the heart pounding end.

This story has its page turning twists and turns, but I am undecided as to which genre it belongs, because apart from it being a dark thriller, it also has strong elements of both horror and sci-fi.  It’s a great read.  I strongly recommend it!

    1. Yes he was April, so friendly and unassuming. Yes I hope so too, it’s a good book, he deserves it to do well 🙂

  1. Thank you for sharing this, Sam. Glad you enjoyed it. As for genre, that is one of the reasons I took the Indie route with it – it doesn’t slot neatly into one (or even two!). For me, it’s the story that matters and, as long as it works, it doesn’t matter what the genre is. (That’s my line and I’m sticking to it!)
Really appreciate your support for the book and your kind words about me. And I look forward to seeing you at next year’s Bash – we’re very close to setting a date!
