I’m very excited to introduce a new series of guest posts to my blog:
Amazing over 50’s
I’ll be inviting and featuring ‘Mid-lifers’ who are enjoying life over 50 and who are proud to shout out about great health, fitness, lifestyles, work, achievements etc, but more importantly who are embracing this time of their lives with pride.
I’m so pleased to introduce Suzanne from Globalhousesittersx2 as my first guest to this series.
I have been following Suzanne through her fabulous blog now since I began my blogging journey and she gives me the buzz to want to travel more with her gorgeous photography and descriptions of the places both her and ‘The Squire’ not only visit, but housesit.
A lot of you will already know of this great blog, but if not then take a peek because you’re in for a treat 🙂
Hi Suzanne can you introduce yourself and your hubby and say a little about the two of you?
Firstly, thank you very much for asking me to be featured on your blog Sam. I have and will continue to enjoy reading your posts.
Creative, quirky and passionate. Those three words do sum me up in a rather quick fashion. Though I am sure many people who have known me over the years could add a few more words on to that list.
I have done many things in my life, made some fantastic decisions and some incredibly stupid ones. Many have taken me down roads I never wanted to venture down, and it took me a while to get back on track. Once on track, there was no stopping me, and this was when I met a fantastic man who is my best friend and husband.
A jack of many trades master of none sums up my career. I started travelling in my late teens, then years later with a one-way ticket to London, what was I thinking? Worked on a cruise liner as a stewardess to working in many hotels as a bartender/waitress. Then in between those jobs, it was office work. With a stint learning to be an Occupational Therapy Assistant [hospital] and a Manager of a home for people with Disabilities. My last job was as a Qualified Preschool teacher, which I left quite a few years ago to manage our small orchard which the Squire and I created from bare land and which we sold in 2008.
You started Global House sitting whilst in your fifty’s, that’s fantastic. Can you tell us a little about your house sitting?
Yes, we started housesitting in 2016 and by December 2017 we had completed 25 housesits.
House and pet-sitting appeals as we genuinely love animals and when walking dogs, we engage with the locals and become, for a little while, part of that community. It’s gratifying to spend more time in one place than we otherwise would do when tourists, plus it keeps us busy and active, provides added focus and more interest in our travels. We stay focused on the area of our housesit and leave the trip/touring to in between housesits. A highlight is learning about new cultures, trying different foods and the history of various countries we are fortunate enough to visit.
Reaching the 50s
Suzanne, I noticed in your blog bio that you completed half marathons and a triathlon? Wow! Go you!! can you tell us about these? How do you stay fit and active?
How I got starting doing half marathons was when I came home [as in our now sold house back in NZ] from walking. Bored with no purpose to my exercise other than it being exercise and topping up those “good dopamines.” I literally googled, “How to achieve completing in a half marathon”. Then, I got motivated to set myself a few goals, small steps [literally] and within my first year had completed a few events.
What I am proud of, myself is that I kept beating my previous finishing time. By the time I had finished competing, I had done my last one with a time of 2 hours and 40 minutes, in the top-tier for my age.
Presently, I still love walking and enjoy doing so at a more leisurely pace.
Will I ever compete in another event? Never say never!
Do you have any words of wisdom for people reaching 50?
Create a world in which you are happy to live in and enjoy life. No matter what it is, how small or how significant. Take calculated risks. No one is going to make your world the way you want it, except YOU.
The time for change is right this second.
Just a few more photographs curtesy of Suzanne of the wonderful places they have been housesitting:
Thank you Suzanne for being my first guest in my new series.
Such great words of encouragement, you have done so many different things, such an interesting life and are an inspiration for anyone reaching their midlife. Well done for achieving the half marathons too!
I look forward to following you further through your blog 🙂
